All the catching drills below may not be suited for younger
catchers. It is a coach’s responsibility to decide what skill level
a player is at and when certain drills can be introduced. Also, do
not try to do all of the catcher’s drills in one practice. The
drills that require low effort, e.g., signal-receiving-framing, can
be done everyday. The coach should have a small set of drills that
are done very day (i.e., blocking, throwing, fielding bunts and pop
fouls) and small set that he can add different drills each day to
give the players variety and prevent stagnation. One of the ways to
add variety is to combine drills. This is especially useful and time
saving when the catcher is at a higher skill level.
